9 November meeting

Guest Speaker: Graeme Web

Graeme returned to photography in 2008 after many years of working in film and video post production. He discusses his journey in photography through his use of 35mm, large format, low tech plastic cameras and pinhole photography over the past 30 years. He is now known for his constructed 'staged' images or 'microworlds'.

He was introduced to the miniature diorama genre by exposure to stop motion animation. This recent work is highly personal and revolves around childhood memories, fantasies and relationships. The meticulously detailed images play with elements of scale, texture and lighting and the never ending cycle of nature modifying man's achievements. He has exhibited at the Barbican, the Cottons Center, Holborn Studios, the Strand Gallery and Linear House. His pictures are also held in private collections.

His influences include the filmmakers Stephen and Timothy Quay and Jiri Barta.

Graeme's current exhibition at the Linear House Gallery, Peyton Place, Greenwich SE10 8RS runs until 14th November 2010.

This promises to be a very unique and entertaining evening, please arrive for a prompt 8pm start. Guests are welcome.

5 October meeting

We are very pleased that Pro-Sports photographer Mike King will be our guest speaker on Tuesday 5th October.

Mike covered the major sport's events in the 80's and 90's for Allsport (now part of Getty), The Observer, The Sunday Telegraph and he was the winner of the coveted UK Sports Photographer of the Year a couple of times, once thanks to a shot from the Grand National on a Nikon D1 (2.7MP!). Many of his images are instantly recognisable and you don't need to have a special interest in sports photography to appreciate them.

In his own words -

"I Don't cover much sport nowadays, but I've recently learnt that great pictures are on your own doorstep. You don't need to go to a war zone or the Olympics to take great photos. Photography is one of the great levellers of society, we can all do it largely, and it can have an amazing power to improve our world. Rarely does photography have a negative power. In fact it nearly always exposes the truth".

Please make sure you get there early for a prompt 8pm start.

TUESDAY 2 FEB MEETING

Tuesday 2 February
Digital AV (Audio Visual) is growing in popularity in photography and is becoming a regular feature in club activities and competitions. Next year we plan to include some AV in our programme and so as an introduction to this our guests on Tuesday are the Bexley Audio Visual Group. They will present some of their work and demonstrate, by using the computer hardware most us already have plus some inexpensive software, how to produce something rather more sophisticated and complex than just a slide-show of images with added background music.

'An Evening of Prints'

Tuesday 26 January. Alan Barrett (The Mirage Group)

Alan’s interest – perhaps passion – in photography started in the late 1990’s in anticipation of his retirement from business in 2000. His interest is principally the landscape and he has travelled extensively, particularly in the States, in pursuit of the moment when the light transforms the mundane into something memorable. He works mainly in medium format film, making his own Ilfochrome prints, although he uses a small digital camera for the more intimate images.

Starts at 8pm. Guests are welcome.

The Bob - Round 3

Next week (19 Jan) it's round 3 of The Bob Forshaw Digital. You may submit up to 4 images, but if there is a very high number of entries the 4th pic will be dropped - so obviously don't label your best pic No.4!

Subject: any, colour or mono.

Images must be in a JPEG format with a maximum horizontal or vertical dimension of 768 pixels. The colour space for your images should be sRGB.

Please title your 4 images like this: 01 title_your name.jpg and then email them to: aperturewoolwich@googlemail.com

The deadline for submissions is 10pm Sunday night. That should allow us enough time to check all the pics and load them into the projection software.

If you have any queries contact Stu or Marshall.
